Hayden Daughtry (b. 2000) is a multi media artist from South Carolina, USA that is based in the Netherlands and studies in the last year of Fine Arts at the Rietveld Academie.
Having grown up among the Southern landscape of the US where simple vernacular iconography comes in forms such as 'billboard evangelism', the works of Hayden Daughtry take on an aesthetically local shape with an abstract minimalist awareness. Daughtry focuses on developing in situ or site-specific sculptural installations. These installations vary in humor and take on playful narratives in an attempt to hide an uncanny underbelly, corroborating his interest in a twisted sense of romanticism. He is busy unraveling the variability in obscure images of Western society, and manifesting a new sense of reality which positions the work between understood arrangements of Fine Arts and more local displays. That shows through in projects like 'Stumpy', a 9-foot tall truck driving bear who stares with a deadpan flare acknowledging the presence of ominous whispers. 'The Experimental Museum of Lost Artifacts' works similarly through originating experiential trinkets from offbeat moments in the artist's adolescence. Daughtry's works and their physical positions find place on all surfaces of spaces, or underground and outside entirely, particular to each occasion that arises. This all reflects a personal desire to offer a moment of sociological probing, towards more intimate versions of our world's past or fiction.
